Career Education Resources Beyond the Classroom

There are a variety of internal and external resources available for medical students looking for guidance, insight and assistance as they work toward their goal of becoming a physician. These resources include the Association of American Medical College's Careers in Medicine Program and Career Advisors Program, as well as the UCR School of Medicine's Physician Mentoring Program and Speed Mentoring event.

For more information, please contact Polet Milian at polet.milian@medsch.ucr.edu.

Careers in Medicine

The Association of American Medical Colleges' (AAMC) Careers in Medicine (CiM) website is a comprehensive career-planning tool that provides medical school students with a four-step career process to help them choose the specialty and residency program that meets their career goals.

Students receive free access to CiM by signing in using their AAMC account. This is the same user name and password used to sign up for the MCAT exam, AMCAS, and other AAMC services.

The site includes:

  • Timelines for the specialty choice, residency application, and match processes.
  • Career self-assessments to help students consider their interests, values, personality, and skills as well as connect them to specialty options that best fit.
  • Information for more than 130 specialties, including:
    • Patients, problems, and procedures physicians encounter in those specialties.
    • Salary and lifestyle information.
    • Prerequisites and length of training for residency and fellowship programs.
    • Competitiveness data, including USMLE scores.
    • Residency interview timing.
  • A list of clinical and research opportunities.
  • A database of residency programs.
  • Descriptions of practice options, including academic and non-clinical jobs.
  • Advice for navigating the residency applications and match process.

Career Advisors Program

The Career Advisors Program works in conjunction with the AAMC Careers in Medicine, using committed faculty and staff advisors who provide personal advice to medical students. Advisors help students set career goals, evaluate obstacles and provide guidance in choosing their specialty and residency.

Physician Mentoring Program

The Physician Mentoring Program (PMP) brings students together with physician mentors who can provide advice about careers, balancing family and friends, and life outside medical school. Face-to-face meetings should be held at least twice a year, with phone and email contact as needed.

Requests for participation in the PMP will be accepted annually.

Speed Mentoring

Speed Mentoring sessions are conducted during the spring of each year and allow students to meet local physicians from both primary care and subspecialties in a rotating round table session. Students get the opportunity to network, learn about specialties, and gain new insights on their career in the medical profession.

The date and time for the Speed Mentoring event will be announced in the early spring.
